The AI number every vendor quotes is the wrong one
Everyone’s chasing the next frontier tech, which nowadays means AI.
We’ve actually seen some local companies claim their AI alarm solutions can cut false alarms by 98% or even 99%. Don’t get us wrong: those numbers are real. The only problem we see is that they only address 1 step in a larger security question.
See, false alarms are just a triage step: Something tripped a sensor; AI can help you tell if it was a cat or person.
But almost nothing you actually sell runs on one step. Take a 2 am breach on a 200-hectare farm, for example:

Detect the movement
Decide it's a person, not a kudu
Confirm it against a second sensor
Get the signal out to the control room
Wake the right responder
Route them to the right gate
Log the incident properly

And your next problem is that even 95% accuracy at each of those steps means the entire system is only 60% successful (the 5% failure rate at each step drags everything down), meaning it can still fail 4 out of 10 times.
So the real question is not how smart a new AI is on one step, but how reliable it can be at scale, across the entire system.
The question to ask instead
At your next vendor meeting, skip the accuracy percentage. Count the steps between detection and a human on scene. Ask for the success rate of each one and what the system does when a step fails. Anyone who has done the engineering will have an answer ready.
That's also where the boring stuff earns its money. Every one of those steps depends on two things: the signal actually getting through, and you being able to see your devices. Now the drones are fighting fires
US fire departments are testing autonomous drones that spot and help fight wildfires, flying pre-set routes to catch ignitions early and feed live thermal maps to crews before a blaze gets away.
Signal: Same drone-in-a-box logic as security, pointed at a different threat. The autonomous-response playbook is spreading fast, and fire is squarely on the list for estates, farms and plants.

Your keyboard is talking behind your back
Researchers built an AI attack that reconstructs what you type from the sound of your keystrokes alone — no malware, just audio. A phone next to a 2019 MacBook hit over 99% accuracy; it even worked through a wall and over a video call with noise suppression off.
Signal: The mic is the new keylogger. Mute when you type anything sensitive on a call, and assume any nearby phone is listening.

SA maps its road to 6G
ICASA has published a roadmap for South Africa's 6G future, setting out the spectrum and policy steps now, well before the tech arrives.
Signal: Every large leap in bandwidth means more devices, more sensors and more attack surface on your sites. Plan the security around the pipe before the pipe lands.

Malware is now hiding inside AI agents
An SA report warns that attackers are concealing malware behind AI agents that traditional antivirus can't see, because the malicious behaviour is generated on the fly rather than sitting in a known file.
Signal: Signature-based antivirus is losing ground. If your control-room machines still lean on it alone, that's a gap worth closing.

The phone that wiped itself at the border
A traveller has been criminally charged after his phone factory-reset itself during an airport search. It ran GrapheneOS, which lets you set a "duress" passcode that looks normal but silently erases the device, and prosecutors say entering it obstructed their investigation. It's the first case of its kind.
Signal: Duress passwords are a real tool for high-risk staff carrying sensitive data, but this shows the legal line is still being drawn. Know the rules before you deploy one.

Get the electric fence right the first time
Electric fencing is one of the biggest sources of callbacks in the business: An energiser that keeps tripping, a line leaking voltage, a customer convinced the whole fence is dead. Every return trip is time you don't get paid for. Getting the install and setup right first time is the cheapest margin you'll ever find.
Right energiser, right site. Matching the energiser to fence length and zones avoids underpowered fences that fail and overpowered ones that waste the customer's money.
Fewer free callouts. Proper earthing and setup cut the most common faults, so you're not driving back across town on your own dime.

A wheelchair that walks up stairs
YouTuber JLaservideo strapped a seat onto Unitree's B2 robot dog and built a wheelchair that climbs stairs, crosses rough ground and stands up on four legs where wheels simply can't go.
It's a one-off, not a product, and nobody's selling it yet. But the B2 platform underneath it is very real.
Signal: The same legged robots showing up on patrol at plants and estates could just as easily restore mobility to someone who's lost it. When a security-grade platform gets cheap and capable, the uses nobody planned for are where it gets interesting.
